Halfway along Railway Lane is the King Edward School, which opened in 1902. The school later merged with Burnsfield School to create “Kingsfield” primary school, which occupies a site to the west of Railway Lane.
In 2016 staff at Kingsfield School discovered twenty photo albums belonging to former headmaster Dennis Hall. The albums contained hundreds of photographs of the school from the 1950s to the 1990s. The unexpected discovery prompted national and local news coverage. The photographs were donated to Chatteris Museum.
The former school is now a community centre called “The King Edward Centre”, which is the venue for many of the towns clubs and societies.

Taking a digital tour of Chatteris?
If you’re taking a Digital Tour of Chatteris, continue along Railway Lane.
A short distance along on the right of Railway Lane is Old Forge Close, so named because a blacksmith’s forge once stood to the rear of the site. 12 Railway Lane is called Back Lane Cottage, a simple reminder that the road was once known as Back Lane.
On the corner of Railway Lane and Station Street (opposite the Fire Station) is a thatched cottage. That’s the old Boar’s Head public house – our next stop!
