On the corner of Park Street and East Park Street is an empty bank.
It was opened by 1800 as a sub-branch of Gurney’s Bank; Birkbeck and Peckovers of Wisbech. The main building was originally the home of the bank manager, whilst the counting-house was in the wing running along Park Street.
Gurney’s bank merged with Barclays Bank in 1896, and the site remained a Barclays Bank until 2019. The counting-house is still the home of a firm of accountants.
One of many public pumps was positioned on this corner.
The former bank is a Grade II Listed building.

Taking a digital tour of Chatteris?
If you’re taking a Digital Tour of Chatteris, look across the road to see “The Gables” nursing home, a late 18th century L-plan house that is Grade II Listed. Next to it is a public garden and bandstand, which was built on
the site of Dr Nix’s house. It was demolished to make the junction safer.
Continue along East Park Street – past the Emmanuel Church and the Museum of Armed Policing (formerly the police station) – until you reach The Salvation Army Fortress. This is our next stop.
