Chatteris Past, Present & Future is joining forces with Heritage Open Days and Chatteris Museum to present a series of events for Heritage Open Days.
Due to Covid-19, most events this year will be digital. Events take place from Friday 11th September to Sunday 20th September.
Our events for 2020 are:
- A self-guided, digital tour of Chatteris
- The Children’s Local History Challenge and premiere
- A Chatteris Picture Quiz
- “Treasures of Ramsey Abbey”, a special exhibition at Chatteris Museum.
Digital Tour of Chatteris
The centrepiece of this year’s event is a brand new self-guided digital tour of Chatteris.
The tour, which will be accessible on this website, will allow you to find out about a number of interesting historic buildings and places in Chatteris and see photographs of them then-and-now.
You can take the tour in-person using a mobile phone, or you can take the tour digitally from the comfort of your own home via a computer or mobile device.
You can find out more about the Digital Tour of Chatteris here.
Children’s Local History Challenge
Submissions to our Childrens Local History Challenge can still be made until Wednesday 16th September. You can find out more here.
We’re looking for a two-minute video about a person, place or event that is important to Chatteris’ history – presented or narrated by a young historian (someone under 18).
We’ll be “screening” a premiere of all of the videos at 6pm on Sunday 20th September via Facebook.
Chatteris Picture Quiz
We have created a photographic quiz of Chatteris.
You can try the quiz online in your own time from Friday 11th September until Sunday 20th September.
If you want a copy of the quiz for someone who doesn’t have internet access, you can pick up a hard copy of the questions from Chatteris Museum between 10:00 and 13:00 on Saturdays during Heritage Open Days (12th or 19th September) or contact us for a printable version.
Treasures of Ramsey Abbey
Chatteris Museum will be hosting this special exhibition of artefacts from Ramsey Abbey.
In 2017 Ramsey Abbey Community Archaeology project started its quest, to discover the hidden layers that would reveal the secrets of the once illustrious Ramsey Abbey. After the dissolution of the monastries in 1539, the abbey was demolished.
You will be able to see a small collection of items found at the Ramsey Abbey dig, including pottery, carved stone from windows and other decorative pieces, coins, roof and floor tiles, etc. This special exhibition marks the first time that the artefacts from this archaeological dig will be placed on display in a museum.
The museum would like to know if Chatteris residents have found similar items here in Chatteris, as Chatteris Abbey was built at the same time (980 AD) as Ramsey Abbey, and would have had similar items in and around the building.
The exhibition will be open from 10:00 – 13:00 on Saturday 12th and Saturday 19th September.
